Atelier

Das letzte historische Fotostudio in Basel gleich bei der Messe ist mein Atelier. Es wurde 1891 vom Fotografen Theodor Hoffmann erbaut. Bis heute ist der Raum inklusive seiner originalen Innenausstattung erhalten. Theodor Hoffmanns Sohn und Enkel wurden auch Fotografen und haben das Familienunternehmen weitergeführt. Diesem Umstand ist es wohl zu verdanken, dass das historische Ensemble erhalten blieb. Es wurde bis in die 30er Jahre als Fotostudio genutzt. Seither wird es an Künstler vermietet.

Diese Glashäuser auf den Dächern der Fotografie-Geschäfte, dank denen mit Tageslicht Fotografien hergestellt werden konnten, sind ein typisches architektonisches Merkmal der Städte der Zeit der frühen Industrialisierung. Leider sind sie heute fast alle verschwunden. Es ist ein seltenes Privileg, einen dieser Räume als Atelier benutzen zu können. Der lichtdurchflutete Raum bietet fantastische Bedingungen für Künstler. Der Ausstrahlung dieses Raumes, in dem seit über 120 Jahren Bilder entstehen, kann sich niemand entziehen.

Workshop

I’ve set up my workshop in Basel’s last historical photographic studio. It was built by the photographer Theodor Hoffmann in 1891 and has been preserved with its original interior decoration. Both Theodor Hoffmann’s son and grandson were photographers and continued the family business. This is probably why this historical studio remains intact with its original equipment to this day. It was used as a photo studio until the 1930s and has since been rented out to artists.

The glasshouses on the roofs of photo studios, which allowed photographers to take pictures using daylight, were a typical urban architectural feature in the early days of industrialisation. Regrettably, most of them have disappeared. It is a rare privilege to be able to use one of them as a workshop. The light-fl ooded room offers excellent conditions for painting.

No one can be indifferent to the atmosphere of this room, which has been a setting for the production of images for over 120 years.
